Philosophy

ASD Academy for Sustainable Development is a platform that translates questions about sustainable development into focused activities for real-life solutions. The United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) linked to it are the stimulating framework for this. This broad-based roadmap for a world in transition dusts off the term sustainability and gives it a new force. SDGs represent an opportunity for ambitious enterprises, public authorities, educational, and social institutions that should not be missed.

The challenge

More than ever before, local is global. People live, learn, and work in a world in which everything is connected. Complexity brings with it many advantages and concerns. Every person, region, country, and continent is looking for an advantage; often at the expense of others. Humanity is confronted with a complex ecological, economic, and social task. It calls for a common framework. A framework which supports us while inspiring us to move beyond it.

The guide

The framework that is increasingly used worldwide is The United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. In 2015, 193 countries committed to its 17 underlying principles. An agenda bigger than green, its ambitions extend to urban development, health and welfare, agriculture and food.

Anyone who’s googled “global goals” will see that its popularity is slowly but surely rising. Companies pay these terms lip service; educational institutions use the buzzwords and some governments apply the objectives when monitoring their activities. That’s good, but we need to do better.

The invitation

Global effect starts with local action. It is precisely for this reason that ASD embraces the philosophy of the 17 sustainable development objectives. They offer an unusually practical action perspective for everyone. From student to entrepreneur, from lecturer to civil servant.

ASD is not a school; there is no building. The world is the classroom for anyone who wants change. We are a catalyst for critical thinking and a motivator to get you started with the SDGs. We make the goals understandable, manageable and therefore functional. Like no other institution, we excel at developing creative concepts for governments, businesses, educational and social institutions. It can be about thinking up new activities for certain goals. It may involve linking already-existing activities to one or more of the 2030 objectives. No matter what the form of the challenge, our invitation is always to work together in a spirit of one world. Your goals are just the start.
